Crimes against women in Odisha have shown fluctuating trends in recent years, with both increases and decreases reported.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported a 23% rise in crimes against women in Odisha in 2021, with cases increasing from 25,489 in 2020 to 31,352 in 2021. This included the highest number of assault cases intended to outrage modesty and cybercrimes against women in the country.
Despite the decrease in 2022, Odisha ranked fourth in the country for crimes against women, indicating that the state continues to face significant challenges in ensuring women’s safety.
Government Initiatives: To address these issues, the Odisha government has established the Crime against Women & Children Wing under the CID CB. This specialized unit focuses on ensuring the rights, safety, dignity, and empowerment of women and children in the state.
While the recent decline in reported crimes against women in Odisha is a positive development, the state remains among the top in the country for such offenses. Continuous efforts, including stringent law enforcement and public awareness campaigns, are essential to ensure the safety and well-being of women in Odisha.
